The Cefn Coed Colliery opened in 1928 and at its height in 1945 it employed up to 908 people. Its winding engine was powered by these Lancashire Boilers which were installed in 1927. They were fuelled by coal - though not from the pit they powered as it was unsuitable - and by methane, which the pit produced in great volume.
