The Castle Apartments, seen here from the foot of the Norman keep, represented the height of Victorian opulence. Constructed at the instruction of the third Marquis of Bute and designed by architect William Burges, this was one of the six homes the Marquis lived in. With an annual income of £300,000 (in today's money that's about £3 billion), expense was no object when it came to equipping the apartments for comfortable living.
