Saint Hywyn founded a monastery at Aberdaron in the 6th Century. The current church, standing just above the shoreline, has two naves and a simple bell tower. It was built in 1137, and extended in the 14th Century. St Hywyn's was an important religious institution as it is close to the end of the pilgrim route to Bardsey Island.
