Richard III granted a charter to Llandovery in 1485, and the town became a Corporation, governed by a bailiff and a Council of Burgesses. Its first Town Hall was built in the same year, though it was in a state of disrepair just fifty years later, and was replaced by a more robust structure using stone from the castle which burned down in 1532. The present building is the fourth, and dates from 1857.
