Part of Pontypool Park, once the grounds of a grand mansion called Pontypool House, the Italian Gardens are thought to have been established around 1850 after the then-owner, John Hanbury, visited Italy and returned with a variety of plant specimens. The garden was inspired by the Isola Bella Gardens in Lake Maggiore.
