Near the head of the Rhondda Fawr valley, Ynyswen is a village just north of Treorchy. As is the case in many parts of the Valleys, it has a dramatic mountain backdrop - the ridge of Cefn y Rhondda is 481 metres at its highest point. The small town of Maerdy at the head of the Rhondda Fach valley is directly over the hill from Ynyswen.
