Cruckbarn

Cruckbarn is a unique and special place to stay. It is a luxury holiday cottage providing quality accommodation in a quiet, secluded woodland, and is situated perfectly for visiting Ludlow, or walking in the Welsh hills. A recently converted barn with a traditional feel, full of oak beams, it has quality fittings, a wood-burner, outdoor fire-pit, open plan kitchen/living space, and beautiful views.

We have constructed almost every part of Cruckbarn ourselves. Oak for the frame came from the local woodland and many of the other materials have been locally sourced. We have tried to maintain an environmentally sensitive approach throughout, including installing a Ground Source Heat Pump for heating and hot-water.

Cruckbarn is perfect for families, couples or small groups of friends.

The accommodation

Accommodating 4-5 people, it has a mezzanine bedroom containing a king-sized bed, and a second bedroom with a double and additional single bed. Along with these on the first floor is a bathroom. Downstairs, is a hallway, walk in shower/wc, and a generously proportioned open-plan living space, with a well-stocked kitchen, large hand-made oak dining-table, sofas, log-burning stove, record player, and plenty of books to browse. Doors lead out to an outside seating area, and the fire-pit complete with barbecue equipment and a plentiful supply of firewood foraged from the surrounding woodland.

Views out are fantastic, into the surrounding woods, as well as over the valley towards Wigmore Castle (just a few hundred metres walk) and the Herefordshire and Shropshire hills.

Our Cruckbarn is our 'labour of love'. Built from 100 oak trees grown in the neighbouring woodland, we have done the majority of the construction work ourselves, including the more recent conversion work to turn it into a luxury holiday cottage.

The location

Located within the Marches, along the border between England and Wales, our Cruckbarn is in a peaceful and secluded position on the edge of our woodland, looking down over the Wigmore valley. Ludlow town is just under 10 miles drive, and the pretty border towns of Presteigne and Knighton are a similar distance away. There are lots of interesting historic houses and gardens within walking distance or a short drive away.

Ludlow is a very picturesque market town, with an imposing castle ruin, river, and a wealth of independent shops. Known for its Food Festival, both within the town and the surrounding villages there are numerous excellent pubs and restaurants.

Walking and cycling is excellent straight out of the door of our Cruckbarn, with peaceful roads and footpaths, stunning views, and lots of wildlife to explore.
