The ruin of Newcastle Emlyn castle stands on a promontory surrounded by the River Teifi, just to the east of the town centre. Built on the site of an earlier structure, it is thought to have been constructed around 1240 by Maredudd ap Rhys, a Welsh lord. It changed hands several times, and started to fall into disrepair from around 1700.
