We believe that this cottage situated in Capel Ceyln is at least 100 years old. We purchased the cottage in 2002. At the time it was in a dilapidated state and was being used as a sheep shelter. It has taken us four years to complete the total refurbishment and extension to the cottage. We have attempted to keep its traditional Welsh charm, while ensuring that it is comfortable with modern amenities.

Accommodation

The cottage has an open plan living area with a traditional wood burning fire. There is a pine dining table and chairs, and a leather settee. There is a TV with DVD player and a small DVD library. There is Sky TV (as there is no reception via aerial) and a selection of books. We also have wireless internet.

The fully equipped kitchen area has a fridge freezer, electric cooker, microwave and a Belfast sink. There is a breakfast bar area with views of the Welsh hills, and even a nice view for when you wash the dishes.

Through the kitchen is a downstairs toilet and shower room. From the living area, handmade oak stairs lead to the first floor where there are three bedrooms. At the back, with views of the hills, is the master bedroom with king size bed.

Heating is via the wood burning fire, underfloor heating and electric radiators. A solar panel heats the water.

Outside is a private drive to the property, via a farm gate, and there is off road parking for plenty of cars.

20 Acres of land surrounds the property, and you are welcome to use for walking, games etc. There is a barn owl that sometimes comes at dusk, and birds of prey that fly overhead in the daytime. Just remember to bring your wellies as the land does get muddy and is undulating in places. We keep honey bees on the land (approx 100 metres from the house) but these are kept in a fenced area with warning signs and do not tend to bother people.

Area information

The Snowdon Cottage is situated in the small Welsh hamlet of Capel Ceyln in Snowdonia National Park. This area has a sad history as there used to be a village where the Llyn Ceyln reservoir now stands. This village was flooded by Liverpool Authority to provide water for the city.

The house is very centrally placed being only 23 miles from Porthmadog and 22 miles from Betws-y-Coed, making it an ideal location if you are looking for tranquility but require easy reach to Snowdonia's famous castles and beautiful beaches.

Bala is a small yet fascinating market town located at the head of its famous lake, Llyn Tegid. It is an ideal centre for touring North and Mid Wales' mountains, valleys and coasts. Bala is famous for the quality of its watersports facilities, fishing (fly and coarse) walking, cycling and miniature steam railway. It is surrounded by breathtakingly beautiful countryside, being located within the Snowdonia National Park.

Llyn Tegid (sometimes known as Bala Lake) is the largest natural lake in Wales and also is home to the unique fish called the Gwyniad, a kind of land-locked herring.

Local attractions

Four miles away from the cottage is the renowned Canolfan Tryweryn - The National Whitewater Centre. You can enjoy rafting, kayaking and canoeing. Watersports and Bala Lake Railway are 6 miles away.

Approximately 20 miles from the cottage is the Coed Llandegla Forest Centre. This is a well known mountain biking and walking facility which covers 650 hectares.

The magnificent Mount Snowdon is approximately 30 miles from the cottage. There are several trails to the summit, or you can choose to take the Snowdon Mountain Railway from Llanberis Station.
