Welsh Highland Railway
Come to the Welsh Highland Railway in Porthmadog and experience a narrow-gauge railway restoration project first hand.
Our friendly staff, who are all volunteers, are committed to restoring the Welsh Highland Railway which, in 1922, was the longest narrow-gauge railway in Wales. It ran from Porthmadog through the heart of Snowdonia to Dinas Junction near Caernarfon. However, it was never a success and closed to traffic in 1937. All the rolling stock was sold or scrapped and the track lifted during the Second World War.
There is plenty for all the family and the enthusiast to see and do on the Railway today. Enjoy the short train ride to Pen-y-Mount to see a replica WHR Halt being constructed as it would have been in 1922. On the way back, we stop at Gelerts Farm Works for a guided tour. Our staff will be happy to tell you all about the Welsh Highland Railway as it was in 1922 and how it is now.
