About Llandaff

Sooner or later the visitor to Wales finds themselves in the nation's fast growing capital city, Cardiff, and where better to stay than Llandaff, which consists of a community surrounding Llandaff Cathedral. It was at one time a village (with city status because of its Cathedral and Bishopric) but is now part of Cardiff borough.

Llandaff is an interesting area because of the history of and the art treasures in the Cathedral. The history of the Cathedral, which is called the Cathedral Church of SS Peter and Paul, Dyfrig, Teilo and Euddogwy, and serves as a parish church as well at a Cathedral and the seat of the Bishop of Llandaff, has been construction and reconstruction.

There are parts of the present building that date back to the 12th century and the little stone church, built by Bishop Urban, which replaced St Teilo's Little Minster. Prolonged neglect and storm damage after the Reformation meant that it was renovated in both the 18th and 19th centuries. Then one bleak January night in 1941 a Luftwaffe bomber missed its target and the bomb hit the Cathedral, almost wiping it out.

Restoration was undertaken by architect, George Pace who had the tricky job of installing Jacob Epstein's, Christ in Majesty, surmounted on a parabolic arch. Other treasures to be found in the Cathedral are Rossetti's painting, The Seed of David; John Piper's depiction of The Supper at Emmaus; porcelain panels designed by Burne Jones; bronze sculptures by Frank Roper and the Lady Chapel windows by Geoffrey Webb, to mention but a few. The Cathedral has wheelchair access and free parking nearby.

Llandaff has an active rowing club on the river Taff which holds an annual pub and club regatta. Charlotte Church, singer and TV presenter was born in Llandaff.

Getting around is easy with a water bus plying its trade along the new waterfront, and regular buses into the city centre.
