On the northern edge of the Cambrians, high above Machynlleth on the scenic mountain road from Staylittle, the view from the Wynford Vaughan Thomas memorial is one of the most spellbinding in all Wales, taking in Cader Idris and Snowdon. The BBC correspondent was best known for his reportage of the Second World War, although those alive today are more likely to remember him for his mesmerising countryside through the seasons broadcasts on Radio 4 in the 1970s.
