Worked from 1787 until 1969, the huge Dinorwic slate quarry covered an area of more than 700 acres of the Elidir Mountain above the village of Llanberis, Snowdonia. Over the 180 or so years, huge amounts of waste slate were piled around the workings, and were the cause of its eventual closure due to collapses and the impracticalities of working around them. Many relics of this huge quarry still litter the hillside above the Nant Peris valley.
