Bridging a narrow valley and surrounded by trees, Penygarreg is the middle of the Elan dams (there are four, but one - Garreg Ddu - is almost always completely submerged), and retains a reservoir of 6055 megalitres. Construction started on the dam in 1895 and it was completed in 1904.
