Carmarthen has the longest established market in Wales, with a charter dating back to 1180. The outdoor market is held on Wednesdays and Fridays, and the indoor market is open Monday to Saturday. The current market hall was built in 1981. Its old clock tower, now the market office, stands by the main entrance. Plans are afoot to relocate the market to the site of the town's old livestock mart, and build a new shopping centre on its town centre site in St Catherine Street.
