The remains of Aberystwyth Castle stand on a promontory jutting into Cardigan Bay, at the southern end of the town's modern-day promenade. Gilbert de Clare built the first castle near this site in the early 12th Century. The last castle was once one of Wales' greatest, but unlike others built at the same period, it is almost completely ruined.
